My fireplace renovation has been a slow process. I’ve planned and planned, and then planned some more on what I wanted to do. It’s one of those projects that seems so daunting, especially since I’ve never done anything like it before. But with my recent update to the fireplace insert/box (see more of that here) I’m finally ready to tackle it once and for all!
So, to kick things off I’m sharing my Inspiration for my Modern Rustic Fireplace Makeover.
First, you need to see my before pictures to see where I came from.
When we purchased out home the fireplace was original brick which had been white washed. It also had a wood mantle piece that just sat on top of the brick. I quickly got rid of that since it wasn’t secured at all.
Then when we started demoing everything in our home we went ahead and removed a layer of brick that sat in front of the insert.

At that point we left it as is till a couple months ago where I steamed clean the insert and then painted the fireplace box. No more brass!
You can see more of that here.
Finally, here is what it looks like today. I typically have baskets or other decor to hide the demoed brick on each side.
But, now I’m FINALLY ready to tackle this Fireplace Makeover. Even though it’s not the most horrible thing, it’s something that has always bugged me. I’ve always looked at it as unfinished, and like I mentioned earlier… I have planned and planned this project a 100 times!
Modern Rustic Fireplace Makeover, The Inspiration
So here’s my inspiration:
It will be Modern Farmhouse meets Rustic Coastal, pretty much matching the rest of my home. But the biggest thing is I want a lot of white brought into this room. It’s our family room and main room of our home, so I dream of a bright and inviting space.
My plan for the fireplace is:
- Add a white shiplap accent wall above
- Add a new wood mantle
- Add white wood columns
- Trim everything out
- Tile with marble on the surround & hearth
- Decorate & enjoy!
Below is a mock-up I did to give you a better idea.
