I’m back with a major update on my Modern Rustic Fireplace Makeover! I started building the frame for the surround, I built my mantle, and I have installed & completed the Shiplap accent wall! I’ll share more on my surround frame and mantle later, but read on to see how I installed & painted my Shiplap accent wall!

Before I could even start my Shiplap wall I needed to build my Mantle. I’ll be sharing that tutorial later. But once my mantle was installed I started my shiplap wall by framing the side’s in with 1″x 4″. I also started building my surround wood columns, which you can see a little sneak peek below.
Once I had my frame installed I cut out all my shiplap planks to size, which was 71″ long. I then lightly sanded them and got them ready for paint.
To do that I used my Super Finish Max HVLP Sprayer from HomeRight to pre-paint them before installation. By painting first, it makes installation much easier. I should have also painted my side wood boards, but I completely forgot to do it before I installed them. Whoops!
You can see much more on how I painted the Shiplap over on HomeRight’s DIY blog here.
Once everything was dry I started installing the shiplap. I made sure to pre-measure to see how many boards I would need and I ended up needing 9 full boards and then one 3/4 board. For the best visual effects, try to use a full board at the bottom and work your way up.
I used my air compressor and nail gun with 2″ nails to install the planks. I also made sure to double check after every couple boards if I’m still level.
Next, I worked my way to the top (Step 1 & 2). If your lucky like me, then you might have an un-level ceiling, but no need to worry, once I added the crown molding (Step 3) you longer notice the gap.
Next, I patched any holes (Step 4), caulked in all the seams and gaps, and finally touched up the paint.
To cut in the edges on my walls I used my QuickPainter Pad Edge Painter from HomeRight. It makes cutting in any edge a breeze, plus it’s such a fun tool to use! Once you start using it you won’t want to put it down.
