How to Make Vintage Glass Glitter

I love the look of glass glitter decor, whether it’s Fall decor, Christmas decor, or New Years, the classic and vintage look is so pretty. However, I never can seem to find a color I want, like aqua. So, I finally tried making my own…and it’s amazing!

I’m pretty obsessed with the outcome, so much that I want to cover everything in glass glitter! Who knew it was so easy to make. Plus, you can make almost any color you want, like aqua.

Here’s How to Make Vintage Glass Glitter!

To get started you’ll need to shop for glass ornament bulbs. The key thing here is to find NON shatterproof. This is surprisingly hard these days, with everything becoming shatterproof. I know when it comes to purchasing Christmas ornaments I always look for shatterproof, since little kids ALWAYS find a way to grab them and drop them. But in order to make glass glitter you need the opposite. I was able to find several colors at Hobby Lobby.

Here’s what you’ll need to make Vintage Glass Glitter.

Materials Needed:

    • Glass Ornament Bulbs in aqua
    • Rolling Pin
    • Ziplock Bags
    • Towel
    • Cutting Board

Step 1 // Start by removing the metal tops & wire from each bulb.

Step 2 // Place the bulbs into a ziplock bag, you might want to double bag if you want really fine glitter. I started with 4 small bulbs, but ended up using 10 to get a decent amount (about 1 1/2 cups worth).

Step 3 // Next, gently tap each bulk to break it. This was the fun part! That initial pop sound typically brings fear (ie- little kids) but in this case is was so fun.

Step 4 // Then, wrap the ziplock bag in a towel and start rolling. The towel helps protect the rolling pin along with the cutting board and your hands.

After rolling a couple minutes you’ll start to notice the glitter take shape. Depending on how fine you want the glitter, keep rolling till you achieve it.

Here’s my after.

Like I said before, I’m obsessed! I have so many projects in mind that this vintage glass glitter would be perfect for.

Enjoy!

I saw the pumpkins and they are beautiful. Do you seal them afterwards? If so what product do you use to seal them?

    Thank you

Love this idea as I have a ton of ornaments! Are the shards sharp at all?

These are cute. You don’t say if the shards are sharp and able to cut anyone that may handle the pumpkin? Thanks for sharing.

I like to use Kraft paper bags instead of a ziplock. I take the broken glass and drop them into a lunch size kraft bag. Then, take larger paper grocery bags to bookended over the smaller bag. This keeps any shards from poking out and possibly lodging into your rolling pin. I used to use a hammer but love the idea of the rolling pin as it will make it easier to roll across all of the glass in one motion. Shake the bag after a few rolls to get the pieces redistributed.
I’m not sure what glue she used but I would use modpodge or e6000 to seal in the sharper edges.
