Craft Space Home Projects

How to Create a Craft Area in a Small Space

I have always dreamed of having an entire room dedicated to a craft and workspace for myself. But lets be honest, for most of us that will always just be a dream. With 3 kids in my home, both my husband and I working from home, the idea of taking away a room for myself is not likely. So, I found a way to create a Craft Area in a Small Space of my home. Here’s how you can do it too!

Almost every room in my home is maxed out, with the exception of what we call our “Bonus room”. It’s a space that continues to evolve as we need it, right now it’s a storage space (my home lacks major storage), a playroom for my kids toys (again their rooms are tiny), and a place I try to work from. I’m constantly moving items around and reworking the space, but I finally decided to carve out an area just for me!

That area is actually a corner of a room to be exact!

As you can see we have large white cabinets, and open shelving next to it. This room has no closet so those cabinets act as that. During my last rearranging of the room I took an old IKEA KALLAX cube unit and stacked our IKEA BILLY bookshelf on top (everything is secured to the wall as well). This gave me some more space to work with.

Then I purchased my new craft table which is actually the IKEA TORNVIKEN Kitchen Island. You can check out how I prepped, primed, and painted it below. Painting laminate furniture can be tricky, so make sure to click the link below to see just how to do it.

Here’s How to Create a Craft Area
…in a Small Space!

After, my new table was setup I started creating the rest of the small space. I added a rug for comfort, a new chair, and plenty of organization.

1- Carve a corner out of a room

Start with finding an area you can fully utilize. It that means just a desk, or a small table and wall space, that will work. But try to create a corner or nook that is clearly defined as your space. My space feels much bigger than it is since the room has vaulted ceilings.

2- Find Table or Counter Space

If possible find a way to have a table/counter work space. Maybe a folding table is best, or a fold down table from the wall, or if you do have a little space, something like the IKEA TORNVIKEN Kitchen Island really works great.

3- Have a designated space for Everything

After your initial space it setup, you’ll then need to create a space for everything, and I mean everything. This is also a great time to clean and purge items that are just clutter. Use baskets, bins, boxes, etc… labeling also makes it easier to access items when you need them.

I’m still in the process of doing this, I currently have my craft supplies spread across my house and I’m trying to pull everything together to clean, purge, and organize.

4- Utilize Wall Space

Don’t forget about your wall space. Try to utilize it to the max if need be, that means hanging baskets, bins, shelf’s, and peg boards.

5- Make a temporary storage bin for ongoing projects

Having a small craft area doesn’t allow for ongoing large messes. So I started using a couple baskets for ongoing working projects. That way If I don’t have time to finish a project I can just throw everything in the basket and set aside.

There you have it, my craft area may be small but I’m using it to it’s fullest potential! Make sure to check back for more updates on my craft space. Enjoy!

Love your craft space. I see that you are using the Tornviken island from Ikea. Could you tell me how far apart the shelves are? (Meaning how tall of an item could I fit on each shelf.) I can’t seem to find that information on the Ikea website.

Such clever ideas for setting up a craft space in a small area! Love how this proves you don’t need a huge room to get creative—just smart storage and a bit of organisation.
