DIY Outdoor Update, Hide the Ugly with a Wood Cover!

This post has been sponsored by HomeRight. This post also contains affiliate links. All opinions and comments are 100% mine, I only promote products I believe in.

Ever since we purchased our home, almost 6 years ago, I have wanted to throw away a wood cover that was left behind. It served it’s purpose as a way to cover up the ugly pool plumbing. What’s worse is that we were told most of the plumbing was no longer needed or in use. So, almost 6 years later I’m finally tearing it down and building a new Modern wood cover.

When I started planning my design I knew I wanted it to match my Wood Pool Cover that I built a couple years ago. I also wanted to make it slimmer than the last cover since it didn’t need to take up that much space. So to get started I laid out 2×4’s around the plumbing to get a starting measurement.

From there I framed out the bottom and the top of the frame with 2×4’s.

As you can see they don’t look the same since the bottom needs to fit around plumbing. I assembled the frame with 2 1/2″ wood screws and wood glue.

Next, I attached more 2×4’s to the bottom of the frame, followed by the top. The overall wood cover ended up being 51″ tall and 4ft long by 15″ wide.

After the frame was assembled I moved it into place to make sure it fit perfectly. I then started cutting my wood boards to size. I used 1″ thick boards and alternated between 2 1/2″ wide, 3 1/2″ wide, and 5 1/2″ wide.

My biggest tip is to cut these pieces as you go and with the wood cover in place. The floor is not level so I went piece by piece to make sure I kept the boards level.

To install the boards I used 3″ nails in my nail gun. It’s so much easier to use a nail gun whenever possible! I finished installing the boards to the top of the cover.

Last, I purchased a pre-made wood top/board and cut it to size. Everything also got a light sanding.

Next, was the fun part. Stain!

I used my Super Finish Max Extra HVLP Paint Sprayer and the Large Spray Shelter from HomeRight. Since I was matching my pool cover I used the same Dark Walnut stain.

You can see all the details on how to stain and seal the wood cover on HomeRight’s DIY blog here.

Once it was stained and dry I moved it back into place and screwed the top to the base. Here’s the after of my new modern wood utility cover.

It’s night and day different. It honestly makes our backyard look so much nicer and finished.

Here’s another view from across our pool.

What do you think? Doesn’t it look so much better?

If you don’t already own a Super Finish Max Extra HVLP Paint Sprayer or Large Spray Shelter from HomeRight go grab one today.

Don’t forget to head on over to HomeRight’s DIY Blog here to learn how to use the Super Finish Max Sprayer.

Enjoy!

yes it does look nice, but you have to remember that when they did the old one it too looked nice when done and they had to accommodate all those pipes and have access to them. so, I’m sure it looked pretty good at the time. both made good use of that corner. I only mention because on the old house site so many complain of how people did things back then or covered wood floors when carpeting came in or wallpaper over wallpaper. it what people did. and I laugh cause 50 yrs from now when they aren’t here the new owners will say the same thing about them.
