DIY Home Projects Outdoors Summer

Backyard Update! How to White Wash Patio Furniture

This post has been sponsored by Wagner. This post also contains affiliate links. All opinions and comments are 100% mine, I only promote products I believe in.

Sun exposure is inevitable when it comes to outdoor patio furniture. No matter how hard I try to protect it, my patio furniture eventually starts looking faded and dull. So, rather than give it a fresh coat of paint or buy brand new, I decided to keep the natural grain of the wood and give it a white wash pickling effect. Here’s how you can stain your outdoor patio furniture too using the Wagner Flexio 3000 Sprayer!

How to White Wash Patio Furniture

I originally bought this kids patio furniture set about 6 years ago. After the first summer outside, the fading and dulling already started. Then a couple years later we got a puppy and he decided to make it his chew toy! Needless to say it was due for a much needed makeover. More importantly, I was ready to get rid of the green stripe fabric that never matched the rest of our patio decor.

Here’s how to I updated my patio furniture.

Materials Needed:

  • Wagner Flexio 3000 Sprayer
  • Pressure Washer
  • White Wash Wood Stain
  • Exterior Fabric Spray Paint
  • Polyurethane
  • Rag or cloth
  • Patio Furniture, Kids Chaise Lounge

Step 1: Prep

To start the prep work I first wanted to fix and repair the destruction my dog did when he was a puppy. He loved sitting on the chairs, but he also loved chewing the arms. So, since there was enough overhang on all the chair arms I decided to just trim them back. I also, patched any other chew marks with wood filler.

Finally, I re-tightened all the loose bolts and screws which surprisingly were all of them!

Step 2: Power Wash

After the wood filler was dry and sanded, I moved on to cleaning. To do this I used my pressure washer, both on the wood and cushions. If you don’t have a pressure washer, a hose and soap and water work great too. Make sure to allow the wood to fully dry before moving on.

Step 3: Stain

Next, setup a spray area and prepare your Wagner Flexio 3000 Sprayer. You’ll want to use the smaller Detail Finish Nozzle. This Nozzle is great for small projects, fine finishing, and staining projects.

As I mentioned before I wanted to still see the wood grain so I used a White Wash Pickling stain.

When spraying with this type of stain you’ll want to spray small areas at a time and then use a clean cloth or rag to wipe away the excess stain. The longer the stain sits the more it looks like white paint rather than a white wash.

Step 4: Cushions & Umbrella

When it came to updating the cushions and umbrellas I decided to use a Grey Matte spray paint. It was meant for outdoor/exterior projects and that included fabric.

Step 4: Seal & Enjoy

When the stain was completely dry I gave it a top coat of poly. I also added back the newly painted cushions and umbrellas. Here’s the after!

Shop Supplies Needed to Stain Here:

After years of sun exposure and a puppy, my kids patio furniture set looks brand new! Plus, it matched the rest of my backyard decor and most importantly was budget friendly. If you haven’t already, go pickup or order a Wagner Flexio 3000 Sprayer today. It’s the perfect tool to tackle all your backyard projects.

Just out of curiosity how’s the stain and wood holding up? It looks like you used an interior grade stain and poly to seal. I was under the impression poly was for interior use only? Anyways just wondering. Thanks.
