Thank you First Alert for sponsoring this post. October is Fire Prevention Month! Help ensure your home and family are ready for the unexpected by installing smoke & CO alarms and having fire extinguishers!
Fire safety is so important in my home. My husband and I have had a fire safety plan for years, but now that our kids are getting to an age of better understanding we decided to create a new plan with them. This comes at the perfect time since October is Fire Prevention Month. So here’s why we only use First Alert and have a Fire Safety Plan.
All 3 of my kids are fascinated with firefighters! Rightfully so, we have so many people in our lives that are firefighters like friends, family, and neighbors. So, when it comes to explaining fire safety and an escape plan, they’re much more interested because they know that’s what firefighters do too!
First things first, we created a fire safety checklist. Having a checklist is a great way to start and my kids love that we get to check things off as we go. Here’s what you should include on your list:
1. Install First Alert smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms. This should be done on every level and in every bedroom of your home. All of our alarms are First Alert, but more recently we started updating our old ones to First Alert’s Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm with a 10-Year Sealed Battery.
2. Test your alarms regularly. I’ll set reminders in my calendar to make sure I do this a couple times a year. My oldest daughter loves this part, she loves helping me check our smoke alarms and listening for the beep.
3. Change the batteries in your alarms. You should be changing the batteries in your alarms at least every six months. When it comes time for this I buy a large pack of batteries and go around and change everything at one time. That way nothing gets missed. But, if you’re looking for more convenient protection, then upgrade to 10-year sealed battery alarms to eliminate battery replacements for a decade.. I’m slowly doing this now!
4. Plan and practice your emergency escape plan. With having young kids, reviewing our family plan is a must every 6 months. They’re still little so they need reminding, but by also doing this we can continue to update our plan as they become more responsible.
If you’re not sure what exactly to plan with little ones, well we try to discuss 2 ways out of each room or area, plus a place to meet outside a safe distance away from the house. Then we make sure they have an understanding of why we need to get outside, and then call 911.
Don’t forget that alarms don’t last forever and regardless of battery replacement, you should replace the entire unit every 10-years.
Fire safety isn’t just alarms. Don’t forget to have fire extinguishers in your home as well. That also includes one on every level of the home. We have the First Alert Kitchen Fire Extinguisher. It’s small enough to fit into one of our kitchen cabinets and is lightweight, which I appreciate. We currently have them in our kitchen, garage, and our upstairs hall., it’s something that always stuck with me when I learned it as a kid.
