Having an outdated fireplace can be a major eyesore. Of course my fireplace is in our family room, the space we use the most, and it’s stuck living in the 80/90’s! I don’t mind the brick, especially since they have been white washed, but the outdated brass insert has seen better days.
When we bought our home we demoed almost all the finishes, flooring, counters, etc… During that period we decided to start demoing the fireplace since we were doing everything else. 6 years later, I have always regretted doing this since I still haven’t had the time to finally tackle the fireplace.
When we first worked on the fireplace we removed a layer of brick that sat in front of the insert. The results left me with a cement covered insert at the bottom. Since then I have chipped away and sanded down all the residue cement but it still left markings. So, it’s finally time to update my fireplace (at least start updating it!!!), and decorate it for Fall.
To get started with my fireplace mini makeover I desperately needed to clean it. To do that I’m using my Wagner 915 On-Demand Steamer. It makes cleaning much easier especially removing the old soot and dust
I share more on how to use Wagner 915 On-Demand Steamer over on their DIY blog.
Here’s what you’ll need to clean your Fireplace.
Materials Needed:
- Wagner 915 On-Demand Steamer
- Distilled water
- Cleaning rags
- Drop cloth
- Vacuum, I suggest a Shop-Vac
We don’t use our fireplace since we live in southern California and the winters aren’t that bad, so it just sits and collects dust. As you can see below it hasn’t been touched or cleaned in awhile.
To get started you’ll need to clean out everything in the fireplace. Mine had sand and other filler that covered the gas line. I got rid of it all knowing I wouldn’t add it back. Next vacuum and start prepping the Wagner 915 On-Demand Steamer.
After the fireplace was really clean I prepped and painted it black. I’ll be sharing all the details on this soon. But I ended up just painting all the existing black metal areas along with the brass. You can also paint the interior walls, which I originally planned to do, but once I used the Wagner 915 On-Demand Steamer I realized just how clean and new my interior was. So, I figured I’ll leave it as is.
I also really cleaned the faux wood logs. Again, these were in great condition so why get rid of them.
Next, I started my favorite part, decorating! I added faux greenery, white and green pumpkins, a new Fall sign, and lots of neutral accents. Here’s the after.
