Happy Memorial Day! I hope your enjoying the day with family & friends like me. I have a quick and easy update today. I took this Makis Wood organizer box I bought from IKEA years ago and gave it a rustic look.
I don’t think this is available anymore but here’s the original IKEA image. When re-doing my office I had originally planed to keep this as is, but once I was decorating and adding all the finishing touches it just stood out. Also, the side of the room I had this on was missing that rustic look, so I decided to make this piece over.
Here’s the before pics.
Unfortunately, this piece had a clear varnish on it so I had to sand it down. I tried a test spot with stain and it wouldn’t take so I sanded it down some more. Finally I broke through the varnish, but I had to be really careful because this is not solid wood, if you sand down too much you ruin it!
Here’s the after.
You can see it didn’t take the stain evenly but I still love the outcome!
Has anyone else ever tried to re-do one of these wooden boxes from IKEA?
Enjoy!

Looks super cute! I wonder if fel stain would have worked over that varnish.
