It’s Create & Share Challenge time! I’ve once again teamed up with some amazing bloggers to create something unique; this time with Clay!
I’ve completed several air dry clay projects, some turn out better than others. Fortunately this project was super easy to make. But if you want to see a more complicated project, then come back tomorrow!
Today’s project was inspired by Fixer Uppers “Plain Gray Ranch“ project. They had these custom wall vases created and I fell in love with the idea.
Here’s my version and how to make them.

Supplies Needed:
- Air dry clay, I used Crayola brand.
- Roller
- Knife or clay cutter
- Wax paper
- Ruler or Straight Edge
- Rubber Stamp and Ink pad
- String
- Flowers
Step 1: gather all your supplies.
Step 2: roll out your clay on wax paper, I made mine about 1/4″ thick.
Step 3: Start cutting the clay with a ruler
Step 4: cut into a rectangle strip, I made mine about 15″ long and 4″wide.
Step 5: if you plan on adding a detail then stamp the clay.
Step 6: Then after you stamp, fold the clay over creating a pocket. You’ll need to add something inside to keep the clay from collapsing. I used my stamp pad!
Step 7: I also created 2 vases without the stamp detail. Instead I used a clay tool and made indentations as the details. I also used extra scrap wood to hold the clay.
Step 8: I don’t have a picture for this step, but cut 2 small holes at the top, I used a straw. Next, let it dry over night. Then the next day remove the support piece and let it dry another day. The clay will turn white when it’s completely dry.
Once everything is dry you can add a string through the holes and it’s ready to be hung!
I added faux lavender to mine, it’s my favorite for Spring! I currently have these hanging in my office, but they might find a new home soon. Here’s more after pics.
The stamped portion came out much lighter than I would have liked, so in the future I might do without. Otherwise I love how they turned out!

This is AWESOME! I fell in love with these, too, when I saw them on Fixer Upper! I was like, “I can make those!” I was thinking of doing them in a heavy white canvas, but this is cooler! Not to decide whether I want to do these or use the wire basket & bottles that you just told me were at Joann’s. Decisions, decisions!
Katy says
Yes, major decisions! I love both decor pieces so I wouldn’t know which to choose!

I love these, I found you from another of your group of clay makers and was just looking for more ideas to use up a little clay I have. I’ve even started a clay pinterest board now to collect up ideas! thanks.

It never occurred to me when seeing those on Fixer Upper that they’d be something I’d be capable of making. With your tutorial, they actually seem doable. Thanks for sharing! Did you end up using all 5 lbs of the clay? I may not buy that much if I don’t need it.
Katy says
Thanks Megan! No, definitely didn’t use all 5 lbs, at most I used 1/4 of that.
