Home Projects Little Girls Room

Big Girl Room, IKEA Vittsjo hack- Mint Bookshelf

When I first starting this room makeover I originally planned to keep my daughters current shelving unit. But when I placed it where I wanted it I realized it’s too big for this room. So, I found this smaller open shelving unit at IKEA. Its the Vittsjo that cost around $60.

I decided to “Hack” this piece to fit her new decor. First I built the unit but I left out the shelf’s that came with it.

My reason for this was because the middle shelf was glass, and that scared me around a 2 year old! So I decided to add wood in place of the 3 shelf’s.

I purchased 1 piece of plywood from Lowes and had them cut it to size.

Next, I stained the wood a light grey color.

I also spray painted the metal shelf a mint/aqua color. Once both were dry I attached the wood just like the original IKEA pieces were suppose to be attached.

It was a pretty easy hack, plus it now suits my daughters room perfectly!

I’m getting really close to being finsihed with her room, but here’s what I have left:

  • Patch and re-texture walls.
  • Add baseboard moulding.
  • Paint walls & trim.
  • Fix closet; the closet rod recently fell down.
  • Install curtains.
  • Get new bed.
  • Redo old nightstand.
  • Buy and “Hack” a small open shelf.
  • Add wall art.
  • Add mirrors to the closet doors.
  • Paint the closet doors.
  • Add book ledges.
  • Sew pillows with fabric I already have.
  • Finally decorate & style!

Till next time, enjoy!

I used 1/2″ thick for the bottom & top shelf and then 1/4″ thick for the middle shelf.
